The Formula 1® Australian Grand Prix first took place in Adelaide right up until 1995. The Adelaide Street Circuit was renowned for its difficulty and coupled with the party atmosphere, it became a hot favourite with drivers and fans. The following year (1996), the race was moved to Albert Park in Melbourne. Albert Park had previously hosted two non-championship races and this made it a suitable venue for the Formula 1® race. The circuit built there is a temporary one that takes approximately 6 weeks to assemble and 4 weeks to disassemble. There is no shortage of attendees for this race as it garners 444,631 spectators over the weekend, thus placing it at the top for best-attended Formula 1® races.
The Schumacher Grandstand allows you the view of the last 2 turns of the circuit - the tight corner that leads onto the final turn and a right corner that goes around the pitlane entry. Another great area to catch the race is from the Fangio Grandstand. This grandstand may not give you much during the race but it gives you everything else from the pre-race preparations to the start and the pitstops and finally to the podium celebrations. You can even see the post race interviews and see how the drivers and their teams celebrate upon winning.
