2005 marks the first year that the Formula 1 Grand Prix took place in Turkey and it certainly made a splash. The race was held every year until 2011 before taking an absence and returning to the calendar in 2020. The races were held at the Intercity Istanbul Park, which was built to the highest standards as the sport was looking to expand to new markets at that time. Designed by the famous Herman Tilke, this particular circuit was considered to be his best work and was even termed as “the best race track in the world” by former Formula 1 Chief Executive Bernice Ecclestone.

The circuit runs anti-clockwise and was one of the only five circuits in the 2011 season that ran the same way. With a capacity of 220,000 spectators, the circuit goes over 4 different ground levels, which means numerous elevation changes, and boasts a total of 14 corners. The sharpest corner has a radius of 15m, and combined with the other corners and all the speedy straights, drivers put on a display of navigating skills to give the public an exciting show. There are also several notorious corners to look out for, mainly Turn 8. Otherwise known as Diabolica, this is a fast sweeping corner with four apexes and has been compared to legendary corners such as Eau Rouge. Turn 1 is another corner to watch out for as it is a sharp downhill left-hander that comes immediately after the front straight. There have been multiple incidents in these corners and you can expect dramatic track action.
