Car racing began in Portugal in 1951, but it wasn´t until 1958 when the very first Formula 1 race took place in Boavista in Porto. Going back and forth between Lisbon and Porto, the races are held regularly in the 80s and 90s, before taking a break in the mid 90s. 25 years later, in 2020, the Grand Prix returns to Portugal. This time, it is making its debut in Portimão at the legendary Autodromo do Algarve.

Designed by Ricardo Pina, the facility costed just under 200 million EUROS and includes a karting track, a five-star hotel and a sports complex. The circuit itself has a capacity of 100,000 people and the entire construction took only 7 months, which made it possible to be inaugurated in 2008. Today, it has earned itself the nickname “The Algarve Rollercoaster”, and it is renowned for its dramatic uphill and downhill sections, sharp corners and speedy straights. With so many elevation changes, the highlight of the track is the double-apex Portimão corner. This specific turn was inspired by the Acque Minerali turn of Imola and is the one to expect great skills and excitement.
